Nationwide Financial’s David Giertz had an interview with The WSJ Wealth Adviser Columnist Veronica Dagher a few years ago. As a financial advisor, David discussed Social Security. The focus was on the issue of advisors avoiding the Social Security topic when talking to their clients. It was pointed out that it is critical for them to speak about this matter but only a few advisors actually do this. David stressed on why this is an important issue to discuss with clients.

This information was obtained from a survey conducted by Nationwide Financial. David stressed that is important for advisors to advise on Social Security from a retention perspective. This is because another survey showed that four out five clients would not keep an advisor for long if they did not give Social Security matters the attention they deserve. According to David, the reason why most advisors avoid the topic it is difficult to comprehend due to its complexity.

He added that the issue should be a no-brainer for any advisor because optimizing Social Security for their clients is vital. This is because starting out too early will lead to losses over time just as starting out too late would also do no good. It here that a financial advisor comes in to guide the client in getting the optimal plan.
